Original a way war I cargo vessel, the U.S.S Liberty was built in 1918. She measured 120 meters long by 20 meters wide and grossed over 6000 tons. During World War II, she was refitted as a US Army Transport vessel and on the 11th of january 1942, she was hit by two torpedoes from Japanese submarine as she crossed the Lombok Strait. And attempt was made to tow her to port at Singaraja, but she floundered and was beached at Tulamben. After the volcanic eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, the USS Liberty was pushed off the beach and into the sea. Today she resides about 40 meters off Tulamben Beach on the east coast of Bali – about two hours and forty five minutes east of Pemuteran. The wreck is noted as one of Bali’s most famous dives and is also an incredible place to go to for a night dive. This a shore dive with depths of 6 a 28 meters and water temperatures of 27 – 30 degree centigrad. On any given day you can see hundres of species of marine life. A lone barracuda who likes to pose for pictures, pigmi seahorses hiding in colorful sea fans, giant grouper, batfish, angelfish, and parrotfish, are just afew of the incredible sea creatures you will encouter while erexploring the wreck.
